I was fortunate enough to join Wilderness Travel’s Top of the Alps trip in August 2018. This trail takes you once through the northern Alps of Switzerland in a series of 20 daily stages. One of the best things about hiking the Via Alpina green trail is the superb Swiss cuisine served at the huts, mountain hotels, lodges and farms where you'll stay. We are fairly accomplished hikers in our 50's who live at altitude in the northern Rocky Mountains. Or take an afternoon to duck into the Royal Hofkellerei wine cellars to taste some Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that were once only the private domain of the Emperor Charlemagne. As a result, it wasn’t possible to hit the trail as early as we might have liked. We’ve tested our endurance on the Red Trail, explored historical landmarks on the Purple Trail and marvelled at geological wonders on the Yellow Trail. The full Via Alpina begins with 1 stage in Liechtenstein (Vaduz to Sargans) before crossing the Alpine chain in Switzerland as far as Lenk in the West. From here I will hike some stages of the Via Alpina and this time taking the Green Trail, from Liechtenstein (Sücka and Vaduz) passing Sargans and through the heartland of Switzerland towards Lenk where it connects with the Red Trail, but by then many stages will be completed… Along the way, there are many information boards, as well as food and lodging options. The Via Alpina 1 traverses east to west across ridges and valleys aligned north to south, all of them north of the main alpine watershed, draining north to the Rhine except for the westernmost stretch that drains west to Lac Leman and the Rhone.
